On a statistical basis, apparently January 30 is the coldest day of the year in Toronto. For the last couple of years, the city has run a “coldest day of the year ride“. Unlike years past, this time I couldn’t make it, but it was very warm at just below zero around noon. By quitting time, it was still a balmy -3°C, but at least the snow made it feel like winter.
Here I am on the railpath. The studded tires run wonderfully quiet on the fresh snow.

Aren’t you supposed to switch over to skis for that stuff? Looks like fun Jun but not as fun as XC skiing! Here’s a few pics I took of my brother Jeff and some friends while we were out in the same storm that hit us on Sunday:

PS: The nice thing about XC skiing for cyclists is you balance out your muscles, build up some upper body strength and push your heart more than cycling. Case in point: one of America’s most successful sports clubs, the Wolverines Sport Club based in Detroit, MI, had 3 sports on it’s team logo: bicycling, ice skating and XC skiing. Their legendary coach, Mike Walden, made every club member compete in all three sports and ended up producing a bunch of national and even a couple world champions in the different sports! “Catch the Wind” is a great documentary about the history of the WSC if you’re bored some night this winter and want to learn more.
