It’s the middle of January, and it’s a balmy 6°C out. However, there’s a snow squall coming late tonight so it’s time to stock up on groceries. The younger daughter wants to come along on her own bike.
I see parents using various strategies to herd their kids on bikes. Unfortunately, the most common thing that I see is the parent on the road, and the kids on the sidewalk. I’m teaching my kids to be comfortable in traffic. My kids prefer for me to be in the lead, and so it is essential that I have good rearward vision so I can keep tabs on them. One component is my Chuck Harris helmet mirror, which shows me straight back and over my left shoulder. I put a handlebar mirror on the Xtracycle so that I can see my other flank.
It is a B&M Cyclestar mirror, which is very adjustable.
I can see my daughter when she rides back and offset to the right. I like her to be in this position, except when we go through intersections, when I want her to be right behind me.

Here we are at the grocery store. I overbought a bit and barely got everthing into the panniers (about 100 lbs.)

Here’s a panda shot on the way home. Thank goodness for the Annette St. bike lanes.
