It was another wild and wooly evening out at Dufferin Grove last night. Did I mention that it was snowing?
Notwithstanding the valiant efforts of the Zamboni, by the time the first heat started, there was already a layer of snow on the ice, and all other horizontal surfaces.

I’m looking forward to seeing the footage from these lovely cameras. Nick and a partner were on skates the whole evening, taking action footage.

Derek and Rick (and someone with a clipboard who I didn’t know; sorry!) were the race officials.

Rick counts down the laps for the racers.

The eventual women’s winner, Linda the ice queen, during the preliminary heats.
By the time the finals rolled around, the snow had let up. Four heats were run on both rinks. First was the women’s final.
It was cat and mouse the whole time between these two riders. About four laps from the end of the 25 lap race, they crashed, and the eventual winner, Linda, was able to remount her bike just a little quicker, and she won by a little under a quarter lap.
Next was a heat with the rinkrats, run in the reverse direction, to the delight of the crowd. For some reason, three of them decided that the hot setup this year was dropbars on their BMX’es.

Next up, the men’s final. Here they are at the start.
This was another close one, with the guy with the cabbage on his handlebars not quite being able to pass the winner.
You can see the last couple of laps of the men’s race, along with some footage of the women’s race in this video.
The final heat was the rubber race. My this time, I had lost a lot of feeling in my hands, and I took off for home, with the sounds of the crowded cheering on the racers, and reacting to the chaos on the ice.
Sorry about the variable quality of some photos. I actually sent the best of them over to Dandyhorse. You can see them here.

My report from last year is here.

I would love to do this on our campus’ ice arena someday! Wonder if they’d ever allow it?
there are insurance issues, but you can argue that the spiked tires are a lot less dangerous than a skate blade.
