Bixi has been running a fun promotion where they have imported 12 bikes from other Bixi cities until Sept 1.
Given that there are just 12 bikes out of 1000, you don’t see them very often. However, since the foreign bikes are all bright colours, in comparison to Toronto’s basic black, they are easy to spot.
You can compare this with an older Montreal Bixi that was brought into town as part of a Bixi demo last year.
Compare this with the final version of the Toronto rack, that has a perforated panel (for more ads, although this bike doesn’t have them) as well as a row of white LEDs that are always flashing when the bike is moving.
You can also compare it with the rack on the prototype Toronto bikes that were shown last year.
You can see that the final version looks sturdier. I don’t know why Toronto decided to go with black, rather than the blue that you can see in the prototype. Perhaps because several other cities already used different shades of blue?
I’ve also seen the Boris bike from London, but I didn’t have a camera at the time.
From all accounts Bixi seems to be doing well, although it remains to be seen whether or not they will expand the number of stations, as well as the geographic reach of the system.
