It’s been two weeks since the last update. The HPVDT has been putting in as many hours as possible during this busy season, as the end of classes (and the beginning of exams) approaches in about two weeks.
Later the same week, the left side is cured, and the right side is being prepped for the outer carbon layer. The curved foam panel makes most of the side of the bike a double layer, which will be much stronger than last year’s bike.
This year, the team decided to CNC a male form, then lay up the shell on this, and then they will cut out the door and canopy and dig out all of the form. This should save time, and we don’t end up having a mold that is essentially used just once.
Now some filling needs to be done. Today, they concentrated on putting filler on the top part of the shell so that they can layup a mold for the canopy. The ribs also needed filler since their outer surfaces was deliberately left a few millimeters shy of the final shape.
