Here we are bright and early on friday, getting the bikes ready to go to the venue: Grove City College.
We are the first to arrive at the prep area, which is warm and well lit. Tech inspection and static display will take place here.
More and more teams start arriving.
The drivetrain is complete!
That’s a narrow Q factor.
The diversity of designs is really interesting and fun. Here is Rose Hulman’s beautiful bike.
They also had a prototype with regenerative braking.
Here’s a picture from the other side. In this configuration with the large motor and the lead acid battery, it weighed in at 74 lbs.
These guys from Kansas showed up with a modified Barcroft Oregon. They said that they got it on eBay for less than $1000, which with the Schlumpf drive is a real bargain.
This bike with the snazzy paint job is from the University of Central Florida.
I liked this bike from the Unversity of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It had a plastic film fairing over a wireframe.
Here part of the chain passed through one of the frame members.
Olin College arrives under human power.
They had a crank with four bar linkage that provided a clever way of adjusting pedal position for differently sized riders.
Missourt S&T’s beautiful bike gets scrutineered.
Meanwhile, around 1:45 pm, our bike is ready to roll for the very first time.
We have brake lights!
The bike weighs in at 53.5 lbs without the canopy or the crash fairing.
Todd was having trouble keeping the bike upright, which was a really bad sign. It turns out that the culprit was a bit of slop in the steering linkage. Fiddling with it only provided limited help, so the team moved quickly to execute plan B. With the very kind assistance of the Grove City College machine shop, we got a new stem welded, and reconfigured everything to a tiller type of steering.
We continue to test the bike and practice riding as dusk falls.
After dark, it is back to the gym for some more fiddling.
A new shifter and a steering damper have been crafted into the new stem.
Finally off to bed, in anticipation of tomorrow’s drag races.
Update: there are some team pictures here.
