I’ve been wanting to visit the Barn for a while. This particular barn was the birthplace of the human powered ornithopter, and is now home to Aerovelo. Todd and Cam are the ringleaders, and they are building a human powered helicopter to chase the Sikorsky Prize. Most of the U of T Human Powered Vehicle Design Team have joined them for the summer.
Here is a shot of team members working in the barn.
Some lovely details in the construction of the barn.
Eight, count them, eight rotors done.
Various components having been tested to distruction. Drive spools.
Scrap foam after wirecutting.
Trefor and Todd making more spars.
Victor admiring the ultra-light frame that will be holding the pilot.
From the wheel slot, you can see just how offset the BB is for this frame.
All the speed bikes are unceremoniously stashed in the lower level of the barn for the moment.
I keep seeing Koga Miyatas in the oddest places.
While the spars are cooking, the team does some brainstorming about preparing Bluenose for Battle Mountain.
Victor is still determined to make his indirect steering work. Here, he is documenting the clearance, or lack thereof, around Todd’s knees.
At any rate, I greatly admire the team’s effort and dedication, and wish them the very best towards their goal of having their helicopter fly by the end of the summer. If you are interested in supporting this effort, you can pledge here.
