A week ago Thursday, a cyclist was hit and pinned down by a truck trailer on Spadina Ave, just south of Dundas. She passed away of her injuries a week ago yesterday. Her name was Carla Warrilow, and she was just 25. This past Sunday, there was a memorial ride in her memory.
When family members show up at a memorial ride, I always admire their incredible bravery at their willingness to expose their grief this way. When people speak at these events about the need for safer conditions for cyclists, I wonder whether they resent the death being used to make a political point.
Even though only a small fraction of the crowd knew Carla, I hope that her family and friends take some small degree of comfort that we were gathered to mourn her collectively, and to note how senseless her death was.
Video gives some sight and sounds.
