We had a very busy Tuesday morning, with three heats each of qualifying and 5 mile runs. The weather report was mixed, and everyone was a but jumpy as a result of last night’s rain out. Heading out the course, the sky didn’t look that good, but radar indicated that the weather system you see in the right hand side of this picture would pass us to the west. It also indicated fairly high winds.
First run, John Mumme pushing his arm powered 600/200 record to 28.87 mph.
Isaac Chung qualified in Bluenose, but hit wind shear just after the bridge and went down before catch. He is OK, but we’ll be spending some more time on bodywork.
Then Natasha going a little faster on the Oregon.
Thomas qualified in Bluenose, proving that he can in fact fit in the bike. Adam Ince went next (picture in focus this time).
Then long time volunteer John Jackstone rode 2/3rds of his bike down the track. You can see the airflow over the bike in the streamlines defined by his beard.
After the third qualifying heat, we switch to the five mile course. These were the first five mile runs for everyone except Bill Kong from yesterday.
Andrea and Taurus.
Charles in MQ1. During a wobble in the traps, he was briefly aimed at the timing table, but he corrected and made it down the rest of the course. To be fair, everyone after the qualifying heats was fighting winds that shifted between a headwind and a crosswind.
Calvin goes almost 76 mph into a 4 mph headwind.
Overall, the speeds are creeping up, as they should for a five mile run. Gaby from Mexico had a dropped chain and DNF’ed. Unfortunately, the Japanese bike had another DNF. Barbara had to scratch as she was not comfortable with some internal armrests that had been added last night. Gaby unshipped her chain in the Mexican entry.
Both Deflt/Amsterdam riders went fast enough to be able to run tonight.
Here are the results:
As expected, women are starting to dominate the seeding rankings.
and here is the start order for tonight and tomorrow morning.
The weather for the next couple of days looks not very good, but we’ll see.
U of T had a pretty good session, with Calvin posting decent speed, and Alan and Thomas riders having qualified. Isaac fell just short of qualifying for the five mile, and Bill will have to run the 2.5 mile tomorrow.
Good luck!!
