Winds were dead calm with warm temperatures at 5 pm tonight, but unfortunately the first road closure was not until 5:45 by which time the wind had started picking up. Nevertheless we had a good evening with all runs having legal wind, although the temperatures were quite cool. We did get a few drops of rain out of this almost clear blue sky.
We were joined at timing by Jessie, Officer Aten’s daughter who is interested in racing in the future. We asked her about the rain and she responded that Nevada weather is weird. Hans was also observing timing, and he had some interesting ideas about automating timing, thereby putting me out of a job.
First heat: Martina goes 66.18 mph, earning herself a 65 mph hat. Then Lincoln did 53.32, earning his first hat at 50 mph. Finally, Noah improved his previous speeds by going 55.04 mph, earning a hat as well.
Second heat: Andrea goes almost 80 mph, even after falling twice at launch.
Then TITAN went. It had handling problems all the way down the course, and unfortunately crashed heavily just before the bridge, rolling three times. Riders were fine, and the fairing did a good job of protecting them. Calvin did bang his knee on the frame, and he is taking at least tomorrow morning off.
Them came Russell Bridge who has been steadily going faster. This time he finally had legal wind, earning a 65 mph hat, a considerable upgrade from his 50 mph hat.
UofT team off to the side recovering the bike before the next heat.
In the last heat, Francois apparently didn’t like the progress of his run and stopped putting out full power and so he only went 75 mph. Then Martina did a second run in the same session, going almost as fast as her prior run at 64.14 mph.
A good evening aside from the TITAN crash. Thank goodness for the structural integrity of the bike, and the crash fairing that prevented severe damage to our paint job.
Here are the full results.
