The call went out for cyclists to demonstrate their support for the bike lanes on Bloor, and to push back against the narrative that they have no support with regards to the recent westward extension from Runnymede to Mimico Creek. The meeting point was the Bloor St entrance to High Park. Looks like a pretty good crowd.
Nice to see so many of the usual suspects, including these stalwart riders from the Bike Brigade. (although rumour is that Dave is now working for Fedex).
Alison and Councillor Diane Saxe.
The Bromptoning! crew.
Dave Shellnut makes some safety announcements.
Albert Koehl reminds us why we are all here. We want safe streets, and we want non motorized transport to work towards a less carbon intensive future.
Jennifer Alexander is a long time advocate for safer streets in Etobicoke. She is happy to see all the support that has resulted in things such as the extension of the Bloor bike lanes into her ward. There is still more work to be done!
Getting ready to go now.
Here we go.
Near Clendenan. Cyclists as far as the eye can see.
Entering Bloor West Village.
Stopped at Jane, and waiting for the light.
Video of the crossing at Jane, and then going down the hill towards the Humber.
Enjoying lots of elbow room while crossing the Humber.
Near Old Mill.
Regrettably I had to turn back at this point, but my understanding is that very few counter demonstrators were in evidence in the Kingsway.
Thanks to the Biking Lawyer and TCBC for organizing today’s ride. Thanks also to everyone who came out in support.
Rob’s report takes you all the way to the end of the ride. Also he posted some videos on Twitter.
Brian Tao has put together what is probably the definitive video of the event, including a look at Parkside, and the interaction with the two counter protestors at the end of the ride.
